Candide. Journal for Architectural Knowledge is a new international, scholarly forum for architects, planners, engineers, anthropologists and geographers. 'Candide' publishes research on architecture and building twice a year in German and English responding to the growing international demand for a medium that can foster and engage the culture of knowledge specific to architecture. Each issue of 'Candide' contains five sections – Essay, Analysis, Project, Encounters and Fiction –, challenging authors to approach architecture in multiple ways, observing, critiquing, speculating, narrating. Articles are selected through a double blind peer review.
Candide No. 1 features following articles: Essay / Bernhard Cache, De Architectura – On the Table of Contents of the Ten Books of Architecture In his in-depth reading of 'De Architectura', Cache highlight the encyclopedic and engineering backdrop to Virtuvius' treatise. Encounters / Axel Kilian und Arnold Walz, Programming Knowledge Walz and Kilian reflect and speculate on the limits and promises of scripting in architecture. Fiction / Ulrich Pantle, At Home in the City Pantle sees the fictive representation of architecture in German grade school primers as one reason for our approach to cities. Project / Wilfried Kuehn, Model and Event Kuehn documents the key ideas of the award-winning and much discussed design for the new construction of the Berliner Schloss. Analysis / Robert Gassner, Family Portrait with House Gassner connects anthropological and architectural theory in the analysis of a Danish single-family home of the 1930s.
