Islam and the Politics of Culture in Europe

Debates surrounding the »new presence of Muslims« in Europe tend to be understood in terms of European values, multicultural policies and secularism. The conflict-ridden transformation of European identities set in motion by this phenomenon is currently discussed with reference to normative orders, historical legacies, public philosophies, and political ideologies. This volume extends the analysis by examining transformations in European cultural politics. In the past decade, multiple images of Islam and Muslims have become part of the processes shaping the cultural particularities and sensibilities that define European identities. This volume examines these developments in the fields of memory politics, cultural production and »Islamic art«.
