This publication enquires into the role and treatment of the body in the visual culture of contemporary China. What meanings are assigned to the body in artistic practice, what does it represent and what (hi)stories does it refer to? Considerable importance is ascribed to the body as a means of orientation and placement; as an arena and medium of social experience.
19 Chinese artists, theatre practitioners and theorists describe their personal experiences, put their thoughts and views up for discussion and explore how art can shed light on the individual and collective experiences that emerge in the wake of historical change and the anticipation of a newly won freedom.
Jörg Huber is Professor for Cultural Theory and Aesthetics at the Zurich University of the Arts and Head of the Institute for Critical Theory (ith). His research areas include aesthetics and the theory of the political in a transcultural context. He has been travelling to China for more than 20 years.
Zhao Chuan is a writer, theatre worker and art critic. His publications include fiction, non-fiction and works on contemporary art history. He is the founder and director of Grass Stage, a leading Chinese theatre company.

1. »Bücher, die die Welt nicht braucht.« Warum trifft das auf Ihr Buch nicht zu?
Die hier versammelten Texte vermitteln Erfahrungen und ein Nachdenken, das ›hinter die Kulissen‹, d.h. die ›offiziellen‹ Kanäle und die vom Markt ... mehrgestreuten Informationen führt. Eröffnet wird damit eine Art Gegenöffentlichkeit, die von den Akteuren/-innen und Autoren/-innen ausgeht.
2. Welche neuen Perspektiven eröffnet Ihr Buch?
Das Thema war im kulturellen Leben in China bis vor kurzem tabuisiert und wird nun in seiner Bedeutung für das gesellschaftliche Leben entdeckt und breiter diskutiert. Dieses Geschehen sollte auch von uns im Westen wahrgenommen werden.
3. Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Thema in den aktuellen Forschungsdebatten zu?
Die Forschung im Bereich der Kunst- und Kulturtheorie wird zunehmend auch im Ost-West-Dialog verortet; es ist unabdingbare Voraussetzung, dass wir in diesem Kontext zu genaueren und differenzierten Kenntnissen gelangen bezüglich der Kunstpraxis und der entsprechenden Diskurse in China.
4. Mit wem würden Sie Ihr Buch am liebsten diskutieren?
Mit all denjenigen, die thematisch involviert sind, in Ost und West; und da es um den menschlichen Körper und dessen Expositionen geht, können das je nach dem sehr unterschiedliche Individuen/Gruppen (auch in unterschiedlichen Querverbindungen) sein.
5. Ihr Buch in einem Satz:
Das Stichwort könnte ›Ästhetik des Existenz‹ sein und das ist im gegenwärtigen Wandel der Kulturen und Gesellschaften in Ost und West ein grundlegendes Thema.
