Worldwide, scholarship and policy-making develop new ideas and models for the role of higher education and research in society and economy. This development points to changing relationships and boundaries between the public and private spheres in higher education including their public and private steering and funding, public-private partnerships between universities and firms, the rise of private higher education and of business models in the management of universities. The contributions to this edited volume investigate into the dynamics of blurring boundaries between the public and the private in higher education and their consequences for the university.

»This book is outstanding in challenging the normative divide between the firm believers of an exclusively public higher education system and the disciples of marketisation. Higher education researchers from various countries and continents provide in-depth information and understanding of the potentials and problems of new ideas and modes regarding the relationships between universities and the economy and society.« Prof. Dr. Ulrich Teichler, INCHER, Kassel
»Debates about the public and private benefits of higher education compete for our attention today with debates about public and private investment in higher education. This volume will be of interest to all who are contributing to these debates and to the many more who will be affected by them. An especially wide range of perspectives and national experiences make this a particularly valuable volume.«
Prof. John Brennan,
Centre for Higher Education Research and Information
The Open University, UNITED KINGDOM
»This volume transcends the ill-founded literature which addresses the public-private debate mostly in terms of good or bad (or ugly). The in-depth and sophisticated contributions add significantly to our understanding of the complex public-private dynamics in higher education.«
Professor Jeroen Huisman
Director International Centre for Higher Education Management
University of Bath, UNITED KINGDOM
