Partisans in Yugoslavia

Literature, Film and Visual Culture

The ubiquitous Partisan narrative in Yugoslavia served well as founding myth of its newly united people. Its retrospective deconstruction has absorbed most of the academic attention for the Yugoslav Partisans since the break-up. This edition in contrast looks into the (hybrid) nature of partisanship itself as it appears in film, art, and literature. It explores the Partisans in Yugoslavia in Partisan novels, films, and songs, analyzes the – still ongoing – transformation process of the Partisan narrative, and reviews its transitions into popular (visual) culture.

1. Why a book on this subject?

Partisans are definitely on vogue. The book relates the revival with the partisan narrative's (understudied) history. It provides an idea of the partisan story's actual variety, that has often been reduced to state art. Actually there are many, also competing narratives on the partisans in Yugoslavia.

2. What relevance does this subject have in the current research debates?

It restitutes pivotal, but neglected aspects of partisan art(s) to any debate on Yugoslav partisan (hi)story. For almost two decades international research has focused on the deconstruction of the partisan ›myth‹, on partisan lies. Now it's time also to turn to the narrative's actual consistence and to the question what the partisans actually meant for Yugoslavia.

3. What new perspectives does your book open up?

It gives a glimpse of the one-sidedness of recent debates and offers alternatives. It looks into the hybrid nature of partisanship itself. But most of all it presents a wide range of different approaches and of historically manyfold material on the partisans in Yugoslavia from film, literature, song and visual culture.

4. Who would you preferably like to discuss your book with?

With readers genuinely interested in the topic's complexity, with Dobrica Cosic, but most of all with our grandparents who fought the war in question.

5. Your book in only one sentence:

To put a book in one sentence undermines the very idea of books.

»An excellent and substantial volume.«
