Namibia's Children

Living Conditions and Life Forces in a Society in Crisis

Many children in Namibia find themselves facing a social crisis. They have been abandoned or abused, are malnourished, homeless, or live in shacks that barely provide any protection. However, amidst these disastrous living conditions, children have developed remarkable survival skills, and come up with equally clever and disillusioned analyses of their situation.

For three years, Michaela Fink and Reimer Gronemeyer conducted interviews in Namibia with women who take care of vulnerable children. The book gives these children a voice in interviews and essays.

1. Why did you choose this topic?

Namibia is a famous tourist destination. Travellers experience a beautiful, diverse country. Most of them do not confront themselves with the struggle for survival of Namibian children. They don't see the urban shantytowns nor the poverty in rural areas.

The book unfolds in conversations and descriptions the living world of children in Namibia.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

There are good reasons to lament the difficult situation of children in Namibia. During our research, we were impressed by the almost contagious vitality and living forces of the children, who often master their everyday lives with confidence despite adverse circumstances.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

There are national and international statements on the situation of children in Namibia. In contrast to the (important) statistics and programs, this book, based on long field research, primary emphasises on the voices of the children and the women who are committed to these children. It provides new findings that will prove useful to development agencies and state aid programmes.

4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!

With Amelia Musukubili, a dedicated social worker at the Namibian Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare.

5. Your book summary in one sentence:

Harrowing yet hopeful view on the present and future situation of children in Namibia.
