Architecture, Futurability and the Untimely

On the Unpredictability of the Past

The planetary instantaneity that digital technologies have enabled is leading to an effacement of the divisions that separate the past from the future, ensuring that the present is ubiquitous. While contemporary architecture seems to have lost the capacity to conceive of the past as a transformative force, this book stresses the need to rethink today's complex temporal mechanisms through the notion of the untimely. This concept opens up a whole spectrum of possibilities to go beyond what seems predictable. The contributors to this book employ critical concepts and architectural design tools in order to offer experimental and speculative approaches for unknown futures of architecture.

1. Why did you choose this topic?

I have always been interested in the epistemological question of architecture, how we make things, how we perceive space, and especially the epistemological function of technologies how they disclose our way of seeing. Thereby the aspect of time has always been of central concern as time is crucial to spatial experience. I think that this is more important today than ever before as we are confronted with time trajectories that go far beyond our cultural narratives.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

The volume deals theoretically and experimentally with the heterogeneous and contingent visions of architecture by developing a genuine philosophical understanding of temporality. It illuminates the temporal spectrality that converge in architecture/architectural object.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

The climate crisis demands to think and act on much larger time scales simultaneously computational devices act within nano-seconds both exceed human temporal sensibilities. This implies a radical transformation of our relationship to time at which architecture really operates and how the different time scales can be leveraged in architecture.

4. Your book summary in one sentence:

In the words of Soren Kierkegaard: »Time itself is the task.«
