Experiences of Knowing, Negotiating and Portraying Queerness in Games throughout the Last Four Decades

Lara Keilbart shines a light on the question if queer authenticity in games is possible. After establishing a working definition, the essay explores both inauthentic and authentic representations of queerness throughout video game history up until today. I see this approach as a meaningful contribution to a mapping of history of queer representation in general and in games in particular, and to the field of research: That is, to add queerness to the concept of historical authenticity and thus open up a new perspective on already existing game material.
