Exploring Amazon through Art and Literature
In this text Søren Pold and Christian Ulrik Andersen explore the digital art project The Hidden Life of an Amazon User (2019) by Joana Moll. The metainterface and its integration of user-monitoring into platforms and numerous devices has become an increasingly important part of Amazon's business strategy. The question is how to read and understand the profiling of users? The authors outline a number of works of digital art and electronic literature that engage with Amazon, and in an analysis of Moll's work they compare the Amazon user to Robert Musil's famous novel The Man Without Qualities (1930-43).
