Eurasia in the Making – Revival of the Silk Road

A Study on Cross-border Trade and Markets in Contemporary Uzbekistan

The trade-routes connecting Europe and East Asia have fascinated scholars, traders, and adventurers throughout the centuries. Although its modern incarnation may lack the romantic aura of the fabled »Silk Road«, the recent and rapid growth of private trade and commodity exchange has contributed significantly to a revival of the Silk-Road-trade. This takes the form of long-distance petty trade across the newly established borders of states that were formerly part of the Soviet Union as well as into other neighboring countries – including Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China – but also India, Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia. A far-flung network of trading connections has been established and, at the time of the fieldwork, thousands of petty traders were carrying their goods with them in trucks, buses, and planes, traveling once more along the routes of the old Silk Road, largely unrecognized by governments and unnoticed by foreign economic advisors. The traders, however, transport patterns of consumerism, lifestyles, knowledge, beliefs, political visions, and so on with their material goods, and in this way transsocietation along the trading networks transforms local societies.
Like the old »Silk Road,« the modern version is an agglomeration of different routes with different starting points, running through Central Asia and connecting Asia and Europe; manifest evidence of the continuity in trading patterns on the Eurasian continent.

Forms of Migration and Flight

This volume traces the complex and heterogeneous connections between migration and design in the 20th and 21st centuries. Questions tackled address the aesthetic effects that result from the networking, overlapping, and mixing of forms as well as the political and social dimensions of design: How are experiences of displacement inscribed in the things designers create? Can design contribute to a critical debate in migration and flight? Is it able to provide ›material‹ to rethink complex historical and cultural relationships?
The chapters clarify the challenges and possibilities of thinking together migration, design and flight, critically historicize and discuss design concepts for displaced people, and bring mobile actors in design into focus.

Eurosur, the Refugee Boat, and the Construction of an External EU Border

The external border of the EU remains under permanent construction. Sabrina Ellebrecht engages with two of its primary building sites – the European Border Surveillance System (Eurosur) and the Refugee Boat. She analyzes how the function and quality of the EU's current political border is crafted, shaped, produced and eventually stabilized through these two mediators. Eurosur and the Refugee Boat catalyze and craft a level of Europeanization which has hitherto – and would otherwise have – been impossible. While Eurosur mobilizes the limits of border policing in various ways, the Refugee Boat functions as the vacillating European Other to legitimize both control and humanitarian interventions. The study shows the specific, if not constitutive, ambivalences of EU border policies, and explores the emergence of ›viapolitics‹.

The Human Face and Body in Modern German Novels from Sophie von La Roche to Alfred Döblin

Gabriela Stoicea examines how the incidence and role of physical descriptions in German novels changed between 1771 and 1929 in response to developments in the study of the human face and body. As well as engaging the tools and methods of literary analysis, the study uses a cultural studies approach to offer a constellation of ideas and polemics surrounding the readability of the human body. By including discussions from the medical sciences, epistemology, semiotics, and aesthetics, the book draws out the multi-faceted permutations of corporeal legibility, as well as its relevance for the development of the novel and for facilitating inter-disciplinary dialogue.

Transformation and Reorganization of Italian Cities and Their Architecture in the Interwar Period

How did urban Italy come to look the way it does today? This collection assembles recent studies in architectural history and theory exploring the historical paradigms guiding architecture and landscape design in between the world wars. The authors explore physical changes in townscapes and landscapes, covering a wide range of architectural designs from strict modernist solutions to variations of regionalism, mediterraneanism and national style from all over Italy. Specifically, the volume explains how conservation, restoration and town planning for historic areas led to the production of heritage, elucidating the role architects like Marcello Piacentini, Innocenzo Sabbatini, Mario de Renzi and Giulio Ulisse Arata played in this.

Thinking the Problematic

Genealogies, Tracings, and Currents of a Persistent Force

This book explores central scenes and conceptual elaborations of what historically has been called "the problem" or "the problematic". The chapters contextualize the (re-)arising of this notion within the history of power and knowledge since the late 19th century, leading up to today's neocybernetic fascination with control and generalized management ideas which form a constitutive part of the power/knowledge complex of Environmentality. By way of considering modes of problematization as modes of inhabitation, the volume maps its current conceptual-political uses as well as onto-epistemological challenges. Thus, »problematization« is positioned as a critical concept.

Philology in the Making

Analog/Digital Cultures of Scholarly Writing and Reading

Philological practices have served to secure and transmit textual sources for centuries. However – this volume contends –, it is only in the light of the current radical media change labeled ›digital turn‹ that the material and technological prerequisites of the theory and practice of philology become fully visible. The seventeen studies by scholars from the universities of Budapest and Cologne assembled here investigate these recent transformations of our techniques of writing and reading by critically examining core approaches to the history and epistemology of the humanities. Thus, a broad praxeological overview of basic cultural techniques of collective memory is unfolded.

The Politics of Affective Societies

An Interdisciplinary Essay

Many claim that political deliberation has become exceedingly affective and hence destabilizing. While the authors of this book agree that significant changes are happening, they remain skeptical that contemporary democratic theory offers the adequate tools to sufficiently understand these shifts. They propose to reframe the debate by deploying the analytic framework of affective societies – claiming that in all aspects of the social, affect and emotion are present. What changes over time and place are modes and calibrations of affective and emotional registers. In this line of thinking, this book offers a now outline of the political.

Time and Space in Video Games

A Cognitive-Formalist Approach

Video games are temporal artifacts: They change with time as players interact with them in accordance with rules. In this study, Federico Alvarez Igarzábal investigates the formal aspects of video games that determine how these changes are produced and sequenced. Theories of time perception drawn from the cognitive sciences lay the groundwork for an in-depth analysis of these features, making for a comprehensive account of time in this novel medium. The first book-length study exclusively dedicated to the topic, it is an indispensable resource for game scholars and game developers alike, while its reader-friendly style makes it readily accessible to the interested layperson.
