Saints, their places, the rituals of their veneration – the heroes and martyrs they represent or to whom they are often connected with – and the beliefs in their powers have often been described as being counter-thematic to the constructive issues of modern society in our times. However, in the Middle East – and certainly this is true for many other world regions and other world religions – local saints, Jewish, Christian and Islamic, have gained a very ambiguous status in religious movements, political struggles and events of social re-construction. In the case of Islam, perhaps more openly, modernists and fundamentalists alike attempt to abolish or to re-formulate the agenda of venerating the saints. However, at the same time saints and their localities have become a sort of overcharged symbolic incidence in the modern presence of Islam, in politics, in the media and – perhaps on a more hidden ground – in the struggle of ideas. In this volume historians, islamologists, anthropologists and sociologists give a multiple description of the inherent issues of the unhampered continuity of Muslim saints and their significance. With this volume 5, the Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam is linking empirical research on individual saints (including cases from Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, Syria and Morocco) with the debates around Islam and modernity.

In the post-9/11 era the relations between Muslims and Non-Muslims in Europe have changed significantly. Global events have contributed to the reshaping of religious and cultural, in particular Muslim, representations and arenas. Much of Europe's future depends on how it deals with the emerging new ideals and realities with respect to religion and the challenges of Islam in Europe. The idea of cultural exchange based on tolerance has lost its magical aura. Volume 6 of the Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam presents a variety of discussions and case studies from different European countries related to how Muslims are responding to this situation, how they and Muslim representation change, and how cultural and public negotiation is involved in shaping new perceptions of Islam and Europe.

The articles included in this Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam are focused on two perspectives: Some link the comparative analysis of Islam to ongoing debates on the Axial Age and its role in the formation of major civilizational complexes, while others are more concerned with the historical constellations and sources involved in the formation of Islam as a religion and a civilization.
More than any other particular line of inquiry, new historical and sociological approaches to the Axial Age revived the idea of comparative civilizational analysis and channeled it into more specific projects. A closer look at the very problematic place of Islam in this context will help to clarify questions about the Axial version of civilizational theory as well as issues in Islamic studies and sociological approaches to modern Islam. Im Zuge der weltweit steigenden Attraktivität des Islam zeichnet sich ab, daß Globalisierungs- wie Lokalisierungsprozesse zu einer Diversifizierung und Modernisierung des Islam führen. Darüber hinaus ist zu beobachten, daß unter Bezug auf den Islam sozialer Wandel initiiert wird. An diesen Prozessen sind Frauen zentral beteiligt, und zwar nicht nur als Symbole, sondern als Akteurinnen, die die islamische Praxis und Moral gezielt in ihren Alltag einbinden. Das Buch zeigt verschiedene Facetten dieser weiblichen Involvierung auf, wie sie gegenwärtig in Asien, Afrika und Europa in unterschiedlichen Lebenszusammenhängen zu finden sind.

Der Islam kann in der westlichen Diaspora spezifische Möglichkeiten der Konstitution moderner Individualität eröffnen: Wie diese unter Gemeindemitgliedern in Bremen durchgeführte Studie zeigt, begreifen muslimische Jugendliche in Deutschland den Islam zunehmend als Religion in einem säkularen Kontext. Damit stellen sie ihn in einen Wertekanon, der seit der europäischen Aufklärung zur Zivilreligion gewachsen ist. Den Jugendlichen türkischer Herkunft bieten sich dadurch Möglichkeiten, das Stigma des Ausländers abzustreifen und durch die bewusst gelebte Zugehörigkeit zum Islam – durch Konzepte islamischer Lebensführung – Zugang zu gesamtgesellschaftlichen Diskursen zu erlangen.
Die Studie vermittelt tiefe Einblicke in die Selbstbilder und die Lebenslagen junger Muslime in der Diaspora.

Das »Coming-out« der Muslime im öffentlichen Raum, das ungewohnte Sichtbarwerden von Religion im säkularen Staat erregt Aufsehen. »Islam in Sicht« erhellt anhand von Fallstudien junger Forscher aus der Türkei, Iran und Europa, wie heutige islamische Bewegungen mit eigenen Cafés und Romanen, Filmen und Wanderpredigern an die Öffentlichkeit treten, Frauen mit Kopftüchern Alltagspolitik betreiben und die iranische Jugend auf der Straße gegen die Tugenddiktatur aufbegehrt.
